The Senate will vote Monday on whether to advance the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which aims to codify President Donald Trump’s executive order barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
The legislation will need 60 votes to advance to debate when it comes up later Monday afternoon. It’s unlikely that Democrats will provide the necessary support to advance it, but the vote could prove a politically challenging one for some vulnerable moderates.

In floor remarks Monday, Majority Leader John Thune called the vote a “time of choosing for Democrats,” arguing that policies that permit transgender athletes in women’s sports take away opportunities from female athletes.
The House has already passed a version of this bill. The Senate considered it as an amendment to a government funding bill last year. At the time, all Democrats opposed it, though voting to support it at that time could have risked a government shutdown.
