The mystery surrounding Diana’s final resting place – and the theory about the Spencer family vault

For almost three decades, Diana, Princess of Wales has remained
one of the most recognisable figures in modern royal history. Yet
even after her death, questions and conspiracy theories have
continued to surround one very personal detail: where exactly was
Diana laid to rest?

The official account is clear. Diana was buried on a small
island in the middle of the Oval Lake at Althorp, the
Northamptonshire estate that had been the Spencer family’s home for
generations.

Her coffin was taken to Althorp following her funeral at
Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997. The burial itself was
private, with only a small group of Diana’s closest family members
present, including her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, their
father, the then Prince of Wales, and members of the Spencer
family.

The Bishop of Peterborough consecrated the burial site before
the ceremony.

Today, the grave lies on the Oval Island, surrounded by water
and away from the public. A path lined with 36 trees leads towards
the lake, with each tree representing one year of Diana’s life. A
summerhouse was also established on the island as a memorial.

Visitors to Althorp cannot walk onto the island itself. Instead,
they can view the site from across the lake.

That privacy has, however, helped fuel speculation about Diana’s
final resting place.

One of the most persistent theories is that Diana was actually
buried in the Spencer family vault at St Mary the Virgin Church in
Great Brington, close to Althorp. The vault contains members of the
Spencer family, including Diana’s beloved father, John Spencer, who
died in 1992.

The theory has resurfaced repeatedly over the years, despite the
established account that Diana was buried on the Oval Island.

In 2020, it received renewed attention after the Star on Sunday
published claims that images supposedly showing Diana’s ghost at
the church proved she had been buried there. Such claims have never
overturned the documented account of her burial at Althorp.

There is also an important reason why the family vault had
initially been considered.

Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, explained in 1997 that there had
been plans for her to be buried alongside their father at Great
Brington. Those plans were changed because of concerns about the
enormous public interest that would surround her grave.

The Oval Island offered something the churchyard could not:
privacy.

It meant Diana could have a resting place within the family
estate while protecting it from the huge crowds that would
inevitably have gathered had she been buried in the Spencer family
vault.

It also provided a secluded place where her sons could visit
without the same level of public intrusion.

Almost 30 years after her death, Diana’s final resting place
therefore remains surrounded by an unusual mixture of certainty and
mystery. The Spencer family has consistently presented the Oval
Island as her grave, while speculation about the family vault has
periodically resurfaced.

For those visiting Althorp, however, the view across the Oval
Lake offers a remarkably simple answer to the question of where
Diana lies: on the small island at the heart of the estate that was
once her family home.
