NEED TO KNOW

  • Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl is out now
  • The pop superstar promoted the album with an interview on Hits Radio
  • She opened up on the broadcast about her relationship to social media

Taylor Swift used to spend a lot of time on her phone. Now, not so much.

The pop superstar, 35, appeared on Hits Radio on Friday, Oct. 3 to discuss her new album The Life of a Showgirl and opened up about making a conscious decision to spend less time on social media.

The topic arose as Swift spoke about keeping her head clear during the Eras Tour, and a host asked if she was able to stop doomscrolling during that time. “Oh, I really am not much of a scroller at all,” she said.

“Like, I don’t have the apps on my phone, or else — ‘cause it’s really effective, right? Like they know what I want to see, and they’re going to show it to me,” explained the “Karma” singer. “I’d rather just spend those hours doing something else or planning something fun for the fans for the way we’re going to put out this album or baking or, like, I have a lot of hobbies.”

But that hasn’t always been the case. “I didn’t really have as many hobbies when I spent a lot of time scrolling,” she admitted.

“It’s been so much fun kind of mandating a different relationship with social media,” said Swift, noting that she does still see a lot of online content. “Like, I can get sent things, and I’ll see everyone.”

She then turned to one of the hosts. “I’ll see your funny reels. Like, you’re hilarious. You’re great. You’re a great, great follow,” said the Grammy winner. “But yeah, I think that when there’s so much of any type of opinion about me, it’s like… don’t put that in my brain.”

Swift added, “Anything you put in your brain, it’s going to internalize. I have a real priority on being peaceful and happy — not all the time, but not over something. I’m not gonna, like, you know, have a messy, dramatic feeling about something that doesn’t actually matter and isn’t really real.”

The “Wood” musician acknowledged the rise of “rage-baiting” on social media for engagement. “Getting attention has now been monetized,” she said. “So, you have to just know what world we live in and kind of choose what reality you want to be in.”

The Life of a Showgirl came out on Friday, Oct. 3. In addition to not doomscrolling in this era of her life, Swift told BBC Radio 1 she won’t be touring for the album in the near future as she reflected on the blockbuster Eras Tour.

“For me it feels like such an honor that the fans made it into what it was, because it was truly astonishing for all of us who were on that tour. We were like, what is going on? It turned into something very quickly that we, that exceeded any of our expectations for what the tour could have been,” she said.

The “Opalite” singer spoke about her appreciation for the Eras Tour.

“I knew it was crazy what was happening. We have never had anything happen like that. I’ve been with my band for a very long time. My tour, my crew, my touring family, my team… We’re all very close and have been forever and none of us have ever had anything like that happen,” said Swift.

When host Greg James asked if she had the “itch” to tour again soon, Swift said “no.”

“I’m gonna be really honest with you. Like, I am so tired when I think about doing it again because I would want to do it really, really well again,” she added.
