Armed man barricaded inside a vehicle after Beverly Hills police pursuit; hostage released

A standoff with a SWAT team was underway Sunday night after an armed suspect — wanted in the alleged attempted murder of a sheriff’s deputy — fled from Beverly Hills police in a pickup truck and crashed into a vehicle Sunday.

As of around 11 p.m., the suspect had released a female hostage inside his vehicle, and a Los Angeles County SWAT team was still attempting to negotiate with the suspect to surrender, the Sheriff’s Department said. The vehicle was located at Robertson Boulevard and Burton Way, which is on the border between Beverly Hills and the Los Angeles neighborhood of Beverly Grove.

The suspect is accused of using his vehicle to strike a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in the unincorporated community of Lennox around 3 a.m. Sunday, near Inglewood, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner with the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The predawn stop by law enforcement occurred around the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and West 104th Street. Details weren’t immediately available on the initial reasons behind the stop. At one point, there was an effort to detain him. A struggle ensued, and as the suspect fled, his vehicle struck a deputy, Koerner said. The deputy did not suffer major injuries.

Then, at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Beverly Hills police received an alert from the automated license plate recognition system detecting the suspect’s vehicle — a gray Ford pickup truck. “Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop when a short pursuit ensued,” the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement.

“The pursuit ended with the suspect vehicle colliding with a second vehicle in the area of Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard,” police said. That’s a major intersection adjacent to the Beverly Center shopping mall and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

In addition to the alleged attempted murder, “the suspect is wanted for additional charges in the city of Beverly Hills,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. Additional details weren’t immediately provided.

The department was contacted at around 3 p.m. Sunday to assist Beverly Hills police with responding to the barricaded suspect.
