Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry will be examined after leaving Friday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons in the third quarter due to a knee injury.
Speaking to reporters after the game, head coach Steve Kerr sounded optimistic it won’t be a major issue but they didn’t have an official update yet.
“I think he’s OK,” Kerr said. “I don’t think it’s anything major, but we’ll have an update [Saturday].”
The injury occurred late in the third quarter when Curry stumbled while making a layup as he was being fouled. He stayed in the game for Detroit’s next offensive possession before being subbed out and didn’t return.
Curry has been listed as day-to-day due to a knee issue on Golden State’s injury report dating back to Jan. 24. He sat out a Jan. 26 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, which was the second night of a back-to-back.
There didn’t appear to be any issues for Curry in Wednesday’s win over the Utah Jazz. He scored 27 points in 28 minutes.
“It’s been nagging him recently,” Kerr added after Friday’s loss.
Curry previously missed five games after suffering a quad contusion and muscle strain during a Nov. 26 loss to the Houston Rockets.
Kerr said when announcing Curry’s injury that he was “actually relieved” by his diagnosis.
“Better than an ankle or a knee,” Kerr said at the time, per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.
Kerr then said Wednesday that Curry was “looking good” to play Friday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
When available this season, Curry has been averaging 27.2 points per game on 46.8 shooting from the field and 39.1 shooting from deep.
The good news for the Warriors and Curry is they are off until Tuesday, so he will get an extended break before their next game.
His availability down the stretch will be key to the Warriors’ hopes of climbing the Western Conference standings, especially with Jimmy Butler out for the season due to a torn ACL.
