Sarah Ferguson, who was known as the Duchess of York, has been described as “the most famous missing person in the UK” as her whereabouts remains a mystery following her Royal Lodge eviction
Sarah Ferguson has remained so elusive — effectively becoming “the most famous missing person in the UK” — because she is a very loyal friend, a pal has claimed.
It is thought at least two people have stepped up to help the former Duchess of York, 66, following her eviction from Royal Lodge in Windsor, Berkshire, last month. While Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s exploits — and whereabouts — have been widely documented, mystery shrouds what happened to Ms Ferguson.
Friends have reportedly stuck by the author, and maintained her privacy in doing so. One said: “She is a very loyal friend. She never forgets a birthday, always sends a present. Nothing flash, just kind and sweet and thoughtful.
“The only people who don’t like her are the ones who haven’t really met her. She is generous to a fault — and it is a fault. She would give you her last fiver, which is probably why she’s in this mess in the first place.”

Ms Ferguson vacated Royal Lodge at the same time as her ex-husband and the pair — once described as the “happiest divorced couple in the world” — have finally gone their separate ways. Mr Mountbatten-Windsor remains holed up at Sandringham following his arrest and subsequent release without charge in February, but Ms Ferguson has remained so efficiently hidden.
Sarah Vine, a columnist for the Daily Mail, writes: “She is, when you think about it, the most famous missing person in the UK. And yet she hasn’t been photographed once, despite the best efforts of His Majesty’s Press. She wasn’t even spotted during her final flight from Royal Lodge. Those players on Celebrity Hunted could certainly learn a thing or two from her.
“What’s her secret? Simple: good mates. Someone as recognisable as Fergie doesn’t remain that well-hidden without some serious back-up, funds and transport — and the generosity of friends.”
Her daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, have also shown loyalty to the media personality, it has been reported. However, it is believed Princess Eugenie’s husband Jack Brooksbank “won’t allow” Fergie to move in with them. This has reportedly added more strain on Eugenie, who is said to be facing “a personal crisis” amid the family dynamics.
Backing the three resilient women to remain strong, Ms Vine continued: “Whatever else Sarah Ferguson may be, there is no doubt that she has always been a survivor, the kind of woman who picks herself up, dusts herself down and gets back on the horse.”
It was even reported Ms Ferguson has been tipped to join The Traitors US as a villain to salvage her career. Experts said the move represents the former Duchess of York’s sole chance to restore her reputation.
