Loved Wicked? Here Are 12 More Movie Musicals to Watch Next

If you’ve already watched Wicked: For Good once (or thrice) and you’re going through a bit of wizardy withdrawal, you may be looking for something else lovely to watch (and likely, sing along with!) after the show. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of stellar musical movies to enjoy—and more than a few have subtle ties to Wicked itself. So go ahead and cozy up with these at home before Wicked: For Good becomes available to rent or buy on December 30th. (Or, if you’re willing to wait, it’ll premiere on Peacock in March.)

The Wizard of Oz

Honestly, did you expect us to leave this off the list? Let Judy Garland croon you “Over the Rainbow” a few times—and of course, look at it in a whole new light, now that you know the origin stories of all the creatures Dorothy meets along the yellow brick road.

Where to watch: HBO Max

Chicago

Murder, mayhem, and a complicated relationship between two friends and rivals: That’s also the story behind this stellar musical set in the Roaring ’20s, which won the Oscar the same year Wicked started on Broadway.

Where to watch: Available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime and Apple TV

Moulin Rouge

Love a complicated and tragic love story? This marvelous mashup of pop music takes on the classic operas La Traviata and La Bohéme, with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman playing the star-crossed lovers. (Plus: Baz Luhrmann’s overdone, eye-candy style blends perfectly with the gorgeosity of Jon Chu’s Wicked sets and costumes.)

Where to watch: Netflix

The Wiz

This modern retelling of Dorothy’s road to Oz features an epic cast—including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne—and a stellar soundtrack. (We know “Ease on Down the Road” will be an earworm in your head for a while.)

Where to watch: AMC+, for rent on Prime and Apple TV

Enchanted

Just as Wicked offered a fresh take on a classic story, Enchanted fractured everyone’s favorite fairy tale tropes for a clever and cute tale. Just one big wish they didn’t fulfill in the movie: Give us at least one song from Idina Menzel (aka the original Elphaba).

Where to watch: Disney+

Frozen

Even if you’re ready to “Let it Go,” the central story of Frozen—the relationship between sisters, one of whom has magical powers she struggles to control—has plenty of parallels to Wicked. (And we finally get to hear Idina Menzel belt it out!)

Where to watch: Disney+

The Greatest Showman

This musical take on the story of legendary circus master P.T. Barnum features banger songs, the multi-talented Hugh Jackman, and Wicked‘s Miss Coddle (Keala Settle) as the bearded lady.

Where to watch: Disney+

Wicked

Linger a little longer in Oz by rewatching the first flick, either before or after your viewing of the latest (and while you’re waiting impatiently for For Good to become available for streaming).

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

Cabaret

This tragic love triangle is set against a backdrop of the rise of the Nazis in pre-WWII Germany—an interesting post-Wicked watch. (And don’t forget that the luminous Liza Minelli is the daughter of Judy Garland!)

Where to watch: Tubi

Hamilton

If flawed leaders are your thing, Hamilton will definitely fit the bill. And if you’re a fan of live theater, the movie version of Hamilton does an excellent job of capturing that magic.

Where to watch: Disney+

Hairspray Live!

Two Glindas for the price of one! Both Ariana Grande and Broadway’s original Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth, appeared in the live Hairspray, featuring plenty of ’60s-style bops and important messages about love and acceptance.

Where to watch: Broadway Live

Into the Woods

Stephen Sondheim’s brilliant, dark fairy tale musical features a suitably wicked witch (played by Meryl Streep, no less). Complicated family relationships and tragedy abound here—as they do in Wicked.
