Scotland’s rugby heroes not only crushed French Grand Slam
dreams at Murrayfield – they also produced a memorable royal
encounter.
Australian-born Sione Tuipulotu, celebrating Scotland’s stunning
win in the Six Nations, went in for a hug with Princess Anne while
collecting the Auld Alliance Trophy. The princess, ever formal,
opted instead for a handshake, leaving commentators and fans
amused.
TV presenter Gabby Logan quipped: “He always goes for the hug
but Princess Anne is sticking with the formalities and hands him
over the trophy.”
On the field, Scotland were unstoppable. In a match featuring 13
tries and 90 points, Gregor Townsend’s men scored seven tries
against France in a thrilling display of skill and pace. Early
scores from Darcy Graham were answered by Louis Bialle-Biarrey –
scoring in his ninth consecutive Six Nations match — and Theo
Attisogbe, before Steyn and Pierre Schoman restored Scottish
control before halftime.
The second half saw Ben White, Steyn, and Graham each cross
again, with Tom Jordan adding a seventh try. By the hour mark,
Scotland led 47-14, extending to 50-26 with a Finn Russell penalty.
France fought back late for a bonus point, but the game had already
slipped from their grasp.
The victory secured the Auld Alliance Trophy for Scotland and
keeps the Six Nations championship wide open ahead of the final day
in Dublin. France still control their destiny, needing a
bonus-point win over England to retain the title – anything less
leaves the door open for Scotland, or even Ireland.
Princess Anne has served as patron of the Scottish Rugby Union
for almost three decades and has been a familiar presence at
Murrayfield since the early 1980s. The SRU has previously described
her as a “long-standing and committed supporter of Scottish rugby”,
noting that she officially opened the East Stand in 1983 and has
attended fixtures in her patronal role in nearly every season
since.
Her connection with Scottish sport runs deeper than ceremonial
appearances. The Princess Royal is known for regularly watching
international matches, engaging with players and officials, and
maintaining a keen interest in the grassroots game.
On and off the pitch, it was a day to remember for Scotland –
and for Sione Tuipulotu, who will surely never forget the moment he
almost got a hug from a royal.
