The Prince of Wales has held a telephone conversation with
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in their first discussion
since Mr Carney became Canada’s prime minister.
The call took place on Monday afternoon and focused on the
longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Canada,
according to Kensington Palace.
A spokesperson for the Prince said William and Mr Carney
discussed the “enduring strength” of the relationship between the
two countries, as well as the prince’s longstanding affection for
Canada and its people.
The conversation marks William’s first known exchange with Mr
Carney since the Canadian politician took office.
Mr Carney became leader of the Liberal Party in March 2025 and
had previously held senior positions at both the Bank of Canada and
the Bank of England before entering politics.
Canada has particular significance for the Prince of Wales and
the Princess of Wales. Following their wedding in 2011, the couple
chose Canada for their first overseas tour together, visiting the
country later that year.
The trip was one of William and Catherine’s earliest major
engagements as a married couple and helped establish their
connection with Canada.
William’s latest conversation with the Canadian prime minister
comes as the relationship between the Royal Family and Canada
continues to feature prominently in royal engagements.
The King, who is Canada’s head of state, travelled to the
country with Queen Camilla in May last year.
Canada has also recently marked the King’s reign in a highly
visible way, becoming the first Commonwealth country outside the
United Kingdom to feature King Charles III on its banknotes.
A new Canadian $20 note bearing the King’s portrait was unveiled
in Ottawa earlier this month. His image appears at the centre of
the note’s front, surrounded by a floral and foliage design.
The decision has a historical precedent. Queen Elizabeth II
first appeared on a Bank of Canada $20 note in 1935, when she was
still Princess Elizabeth.
