Real Madrid ended a turbulent week with a much-needed 2-0 win against Levante, courtesy of second-half goals from Kylian Mbappé and Raúl Asencio, after being booed by a restless Bernabéu crowd before the breakthrough arrived.
Real looked flat in the first half, still carrying the scars of Sunday’s 3-2 defeat by Barcelona in the final of the Supercopa de España, followed by the departure of Xabi Alonso as manager the next day and a shock 3-2 Copa del Rey exit to second-division Albacete on Wednesday.
Boos greeted the players at kick-off, with sections of the crowd also directing chants at the club president Florentino Pérez. Real eased the tension when Dela tripped Mbappé in the box and the French forward converted the penalty in the 58th minute to extend his league tally to 19 goals.
Seven minutes later, Real doubled their advantage through Asencio, who rose to meet Arda Guler’s corner with a powerful header, giving Álvaro Arbeloa a crucial cushion as the new head coach and settling the mood in the stadium.
“It was a very important day. Everyone wanted to turn the situation around,” Asencio told RMTV. “What happened in Albacete shouldn’t have happened. We felt guilty and wanted to make up for it. He [Arbeloa] asks us to enjoy ourselves – to be protagonists, to dominate, to focus on ourselves and not on the opposition. Little by little, we’ll get there.”
The win keeps Real second in La Liga on 48 points from 20 matches, one behind Barcelona, who have a game in hand and visit Real Sociedad on Sunday. Levante are 19th with 14 points.
On Saturday night, third-placed Villarreal – seven points behind Real Madrid but now with two games in hand – visit Real Betis.
Inter continued to set the pace at the top of the Serie A with a 1-0 victory at Udinese on Saturday. Lautaro Martínez’s goal earned his side their eighth win in a nine-game unbeaten league run.
The visitors were on the attack from the off. Martínez had an early chance, turning his marker but failing to trouble the keeper with his finish and Federico Dimarco’s volleyed shot flashed across the face of the goal.
Inter continued to press and the opener came in the 20th minute. Piotr Zielinski’s ball into the box was backheeled to Martínez by Pio Esposito and the Inter striker twisted and turned, making enough space to drive his shot into the bottom corner.
The game, like all Serie A fixtures this weekend, was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of the Fiorentina owner, Rocco Commisso, whose death was announced eon Saturday.
Inter moved to 49 points, six ahead of Milan – who play Lecce at home on Sunday – and Napoli, who ended a run of three consecutive draws by beating Sassuolo 1-0 at home. The defending champions’ early pressure paid off with Stanislav Lobotka volleying a rebound into the roof of the net to give the hosts a seventh-minute lead.
Bayern Munich powered back from a goal down, scoring three goals in six minutes, to crush hosts RB Leipzig 5-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday and protect their 11-point advantage at the top.
The visitors, who also saw Jamal Musiala make a brief substitute appearance following his recovery from a broken leg and ankle last July, scored all five goals in the second half to maintain their unbeaten run in the league and move to 50 points.
The hosts shot out of the blocks and had two early chances through Rômulo and Antonio Nusa before the former made amends for his early miss, tapping in for the lead in the 20th minute.
Leipzig came close several more times in a strong first half but Bayern hit back five minutes after the restart when Serge Gnabry fired in his 100th goal for the club. They completed their turnaround with the Bundesliga’s leading scorer Harry Kane finding enough space at the far post to put them in front with his 21st league goal and the Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer did well to deny Yan Diomande, palming his shot wide.
The Bavarians, however, were far from done, and they scored three more times late in the game, with Jonathan Tah’s 82nd-minute header and goals from Aleksandar Pavlovic in the 85th and Michael Olise three minutes later completing their comeback win in style.
Earlier, Borussia Dortmund, who travel to Tottenham in the Champions League next week, wasted a two-goal lead but bagged a stoppage-time winner through Emre Can’s penalty for a rollercoaster 3-2 victory against St Pauli. Dortmund had gone 2-0 up before St Pauli raced back to level in a span of 10 minutes in the second half only to see Can score the last-gasp winner from the spot.
Lens returned to the top of Ligue 1 with a battling 1-0 win over lowly Auxerre. Paris Saint-Germain had returned to the summit on Friday following their Ousmane Dembélé-inspired 3-0 home victory over Lille. But Lens replied less than 24 hours later as they brought their winning streak to 10 matches across all competitions courtesy of a second-half strike by Wesley Saïd at their Stade Bollaert-Delelis home. The French youth international’s eighth league goal of the season was enough to earn Pierre Sage’s charges three points and restore their one-point buffer at the top of the table.
